Introduction
The rise of the modern consumerist society coincided with the rise of industrialization. Economists who have concentrated on the industrial revolution as a narrative of surpassing the constraints of manufacturing using energy sources and new technology have often assumed that there would always be an infinite demand for products that are made cheaply (Arthur, 2018; Khayou et al., 2021). In the past decade, there has been a dramatic increase in Chinese consumerism. This is due to a number of factors, including the country's rapidly growing economy, the rise of the middle class, and the increasing availability of consumer goods. Today, China is the world's largest market for luxury goods, and its citizens are increasingly spending money on items such as automobiles, electronics, and fashion. Chinese consumers are also increasingly interested in foreign brands and products, and are willing to pay high prices for these items.
However, there had to be an increase in output at the same time as there was a rise in demand. Industrial capitalism required consumers to desire ever-increasing numbers of new things. The study of the development of consumerism examines the difficulty of convincing people to value acquiring ever-more goods and increasing their knowledge about them (Vermeir et al., 2020). The People's Republic of China (PRC) is an excellent location to investigate the background of the worldwide phenomena of consumerism because of its long and rich history.
According to Chandrasekara et al. (2022), the struggle between consumerist culture and non-materialistic virtues is very apparent in modern China. This is because China began its industrialization process reasonably late, and since 1949, the nation has maintained that it is industrializing without "middle class" consumerism.
