Introduction
In the year 2007, Brazil was given an opportunity by FIFA to host 2014 world cup. In 2009, Brazil won the bid to host Summer Olympic Games. This definitely translates to big economic impact to the country. One of the eminent advantages involves the fact that FIFA World Cup was hosted by 12 different cities. This means that economic gains were distributed among the 12 cities. In addition, the Olympic Games were concentrated in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Gains by the hospitality industry
It is apparent that many people across the world love sports and football. Apart from players involved in the games, there were a lot of other spectators that attend such events. Therefore, this translates to the fact that these people had to occupy some hotels (Currie-Alder 2014). As such, hotels really gained a lot as thousands of people traveled from all corners of the world to witness the games. In a different dimension, hotels had taken advantage of limited number of reservations and hiked prices. Huge profits were experienced during that time. The same case applied to the transport industry. There were thousands of people traveled to Brazil and would want time to time to move from their hotels to the sporting grounds. Those who did not have a chance to secure entry into the grounds would watch the games from the comfort of their hotels and other places.
The air transport can be argued to be the first gainer as people travelled from different countries and this requires the use of air transport. Additionally, it is apparent that these gains lasted for a long time since some people travelled some months before the games and world cup started (Nobre 2017). Besides, preparation for the world cup alone was a big gain to the country. Construction of the 12 stadiums was mega project that generated a lot of money. Thousands of people were employed to work in those stadiums. Many companies won bids in the construction process. This was a big gain to both local and foreign companies involved in the construction and preparation process.
Generally, hosting such events translates to change of social, economic, social and political configuration of the host country. For instance, Brazil benefited politically in the sense that good intergovernmental relations was fostered. Having successfully hosted the events with no major instance of insecurity reported is a plus to Brazil. It is apparent that terrorists would at such events take advantage and attack especially targeting particular people from a target country (Louw 2012).
