Community Health Promotion for LGBT in New York City
The lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals’ health concerns have not been addressed adequately by most of the health interventions programs. There is a need to improve wellbeing, health and safety of the LGBTs by reviewing existing health initiatives and strategies. The objective of the health promotion program is to develop specialized components that focus on improvement on the quality of health delivery to its targets (Ewert & Loer, 2019). Several research studies confirm that the LGBT community experiences health disparities that are associated with social discrimination and stigma. The LGBT individuals are often victims of societal injustices, and their rights are time and again violated. The health needs of gays are not always met as most of the research studies and surveys keep away from sexual orientation questions. These discriminative tendencies by the state and other public health institutions complicate processes that would help in developing effective health interventions programs to cater to the needs of this particular group that is marginalized. The scarcity of comprehensive healthcare delivery programs for the LGBT in most of the states and stigma that the LGBT faces while seeking medical attention discourages them from visiting the institutions when they are in need. This is the primary reason for poor health-seeking behavior among the LGBT population in most of the cities in the US.
Health Intervention Program for the LGBT Community in New York City
The number of LGBT persons in New York City is steadily increasing with the current population estimated to be slightly above 273,000. There is need to implement a program that will focus on specific health issues such as depression, HIV, reproductive health and Sexually Transmitted Infections to the diverse genders and sexualities group. Due to their sexual inclination, a sizeable population of the LGBTs in New York City avoids prompt seeking of healthcare fearing that their rights are most likely to be violated by the healthcare services providers.
