Discussion 6: Read chapter 5 of the text. Discuss three ways that you plan to successfully engage students to think deeply about content.
I would start the lesson by teaching the students about the history of football. After learning the history of this sporting activity, it would be prudent to introduce the rules associated with the game, including how it is played. Doing so will provide them with the general tools necessary for the ensuring that the student are engaged and also think deeply about the subject.
The next step will entail reminding the learners about the different existing versions on how football was invented. The next thing to do as a teacher will involve assigning tasks to the learners about creating their own game and providing explanation behind the choice of game they come up with. They will work collaboratively and in groups. The school will provide the materials that they will need in advance to ease the process. Upon creating their game, the groups will be given the chance to play the game against each other to ensure competition. I will examine if they have missed any rule assigned to the game that they have created. Moreover, I will also examine if there are other things that the students have overlooked. In addition, the groups will perform short presentations in turns to elaborate to their classmates about their games.
The last step will involve the groups getting together, making claims, and defending them before the class. The intention will be for each group to persuade and convince the class to play the game that they have created. All the groups will be accorded equal opportunities to defend and persuade others about the game that they have chosen. The discussion will end with a vote from the class regarding the game that the class will engage in specifically in the next session. The winning team will not be involved in the game. However, they will have the task of ensuring that everything goes according to the rules of the game.
Discussion 7: Read chapter seven. Examine elements 23-32 and select three “engagement strategies” to utilize in your classroom and give an example of each.
The three engagement strategies that I will use in the classroom will emanate from element 23, 24, and 27. Element 23 entails noticing and reacting when learners appear not to be engaged while element 24 involves increasing rates of response among the student. As for element 27, it is a strategy that involves demonstrating enthusiasm and intensity.
On noticing and reacting when learners are not involved or engaged, I will monitor them to ensure they get engaged in all forms of physical education. Determining whether the learner is being challenged or struggling will be an important aspect of the monitoring process and it will be carried out at individual level (Marzano 221). Activities that are either too challenging or too easy are likely to impact their level of engagement. When such a situation surfaces then as a teacher I will be compelled to adjust to appropriate activities for the learners. For instance, if we are participating in a game and it seems easy for most students, I will ensure they work on the most challenging part of the game to challenge them and not make them loose interest when the activity seems easy.
On increasing rates of response from learners, students rarely like to participate during warm-up activities (Marzano 286). But, I will have to find ways of mixing up activities for it. Similarly, letting the students to lead the process would likely increase their engagement. For example, I will use dribble relays with the names of the students on the balls. The dribble relays will involve the students dribbling fast down the field and back before giving the ball to the next student. Two teams maybe pit against one another to encourage competition. As for demonstrating enthusiasm and intensity, I understand the importance of being excited and loving the teaching job. I will demonstrate positivity in all my teaching endeavors and encourage them by telling the students how great they are in the activities that they do. I will also use personal stories to demonstrate enthusiasm and intensity.
