Introduction
The postmodern era has witnessed immense development in science and technology. Such advancements have revolutionized aspects of culture, such as art and general human life. Two of the most fundamental concepts associated with the postmodern era are technoculture and hyperrealism. Technoculture refers to the influence of technology and science on human life. It captures the advances that primarily began in the 20th century, including the changes that they have had on human life. Hyperrealism con the other hand is the depiction of reality beyond the natural or conventional truths. The technique has particularly been witnessed in visual arts such as paintings and films. Technoculture and hyperrealism are fundamental tenets associated with postmodernism that captures the revolutionary action of science and technology.
Technoculture
Technoculture is an ideology or principle that became famous during the postmodern era, thanks to the advancements witnessed in the field of science and technology. In contemporary life, various aspects of human life are influenced by technology hence giving rise to the technoculture (Cooper 255). Throughout history, technology has played a fundamental role in not only modifying but also substituting the codes and conducts that defined the ancient culture. Therefore, this has led to the formation of a new way of life, thanks to innovation and creativity. The advent of technology such as computers, phones, and emails has revolutionized the materialistic and emotional tenets of the modern human being (Hyperreality and Technoculture). The 20th century is arguably the period considered to have developed significantly from the influence of the new technology. George Melles, “Trip to the Moon” (1902) is a film that foreshadows the prospective scientific and technological revolutions that would take humans to the moon.
Technoculture has manifested in humans lives in the form of waves. Several major events have occurred that have stamped the position of humans within the realms of science and technology. The first aspect to consider in this debate revolves around the rise of industrialism and the machine age. Industrialization was a period of technological innovation to aid in the process to aid in the production of commodities for human consumption (Cooper 256). Several technological aspects were invented hence ushering in a period known as the Machine Age. Humans were particularly motivated by the need to make their work easy and efficient. Advancements particularly hallmarked the Machine Age in the field of physics. Some of the aspects that came to rise include the atomic bomb, transistors, and computers. The mechanical technology also gave rise to motor vehicles and aeroplanes that became the new mode of transportation (Hyperreality and Technoculture). Technoculture as a way of life also ushered in a period known as the age of mass media.
The development of mass media could not have been born with inventions in the area of science and technology. The growth of mass media began in the 20th century, and technological innovations drove it. Henceforth, humans could share information across a broad geographical space with relative ease. Some of the breakthroughs experienced during this period include the duplication of materials, recording, film duplication, and the development of movies. Many films of different genres emerged during this time (Hyperreality and Technoculture). People could also buy newspapers and books at an affordable price. The advent in broadcasting technology also helped in the spread of information from one place to another. Technological advances also influenced the development of films in various such as creation, editing, and how audiences consume them (Szarkowski 1). Part of this success was influenced by the growth of camera technology.
