Relationship between Religion and Politics/Government in Ancient Civilization and the Present
Religion and politics has experienced an evolution since ancient revolution. The industrial age gave rise to the rise of secular philosophies. In the 1800s there was a growing acceptance of secular evolution dealing a great blow to religion especially Christianity. The elite intellectuals divorced religion and notably science and philosophy began to suggest speculative ideologies. Friedrich Nietzsche a renowned philosopher predicted the thriving of philosophical morals and a departure of baseless religion. The Utilitarian’s valued happiness, secular humanists embraced godlessness and existentialist’s laid claim to the meaninglessness of life. The idealistic thinkers continued with the reasoning that nature had place for eternity and undisputed emphasis on the value of human life.
The evidenced evolution in perception affected religion in a big way. Even more the television age dealt the final blow to religion. The net effect was the diminished influence of religion and the uprising of the popular culture. Sexual and social revolution began to dominate the world from the industrialization era. Modernity as evidenced reduced the influence of religion on the global platform. The relationship between religion and government was not spared either. The thought line from the nineteenth century predicating the fading away of religion and the emergence of industrialization did not however become exactly true.
The conventional understanding of the ancient civilization era suggested death of religion but the modern reality suggests otherwise. Religion in the present day is very much alive and its disappearance is quite unlikely. The advent of secularism is however a reality of the present day development. Pace Vincenzo in his print on “sacred and secular politics and religion Worldwide” (559-562) suggests that the advancement of a highly industrialized society has inclined the world towards secularism over the last 50 years. Pace Vincenzo (2005) indicates the fact that despite the upsurge of secularism the modern world has evidenced an increase in religious people with preserved traditional views and practices.
The modern world is largely a product of historical facts between religion and politics. The society as it is today is largely a result of separated religion from the secular reality. The world is secularized and hence a troubled relationship between government and religious institutions.
