Types of Brain Tumors
The two main types of brain tumors are metastatic and primary tumors. However, more than 150 different tumors have been found. Primary brain tumors consist of those that emanate from the immediate surroundings of the brain as well as the brain tissues. Primary brain tumors can be categorized further into glial cells and non-glial cells which developed in the brain structure. Other categories of primary brain tumors include malignant also referred to as benign. On the flip side, a metastatic brain tumor encompasses tumors that arise elsewhere in the body, including lungs or breast before migrating to the brain. Other forms of metastatic brain tumors include gliomas, the most common among adults, astrocytes, and ependymal cells. Types of Benign brain tumors include gangliocytomas, chordomas, and meningiomas tumors (Abd-Ellah, 2019).
Symptoms
The signs and symptoms of the brain have different degrees of variance which depend on the size of the tumor. Some of the signs and symptoms of brain tumors include difficulty with balance, feeling very tired, confusion on some daily issues, trouble speaking or understanding what others are saying, vomiting or nausea which is sometimes unexplained, difficulty in writing and reading, decreased alertness which may result to unconsciousness, changes in the ability to smell, taste or hearing, loss of bowel or control of the bladder, the headache that grows gradually before becoming severe, gradual loss of movement in a leg or arms and vision problems such as double vision or blurred vision (Abd-Ellah, 2019).
Causes
Primary brain tumors emanate from the tissues close to it or the brain itself. This may include membranes that cover the brain such as the pineal gland, cranial nerves, and pituitary gland. Changes in the normal cells in their DNA result in primary brain tumors. The mutations cause rapid division result in the death of healthy cells. The effect of this is a mass comprising of abnormal cells that forms a tumor. Primary tumors are less common among adults compared to secondary brain tumors (McFaline, 2018).
Risk Factors
In most people, the risk factors of primary brain tumors are unclear even though doctors have documented some factors that may increase the risk of an individual developing a brain tumor. Ionization radiation is one of the risk factors. This radiation comes from high-dose x-rays such as radiation therapy from a large machine aimed at the head. Such radiations cause damages to the cell leading to a brain tumor. Exposure to ionizing radiation increases the risk of developing brain tumors such as glioma, meningioma (Abd-Ellah, 2019). Family history of brain tumors also plays as a risk factor. Families with a history of brain tumors or a family history of genetic syndromes are likely to experience a small portion of brain tumors.
