Harvesting Rain Water
Rainwater harvesting (RWH) denotes the technique of accumulating and storing water from atmospheric precipitation for on-site use instead of allowing it to run off. The practice has been in existence for thousands of years and continues to grow at a rapid pace, especially in areas without access to piped water from municipal reservoirs. Nevertheless, when the potency to alleviate the water crisis and supplement conventional sources is juxtaposed with the potential to cause diseases and escalate inter-community conflicts, respectively, harvesting of rainwater by individuals should be outlawed.
Governments should allow rainwater harvesting to counter water shortage in urban centers. Angrill et al., citing a 2012 United Nations report that predicts the population in cities could increase up to 70% by 2050, allude the accompanying physical infrastructures, such as building and road pavements, inhibit stormwater infiltration (14). Less water seeping into the aquifers implies little of the same can be retrieved by drilling boreholes in the cities.
