Abstract
Women constitute as a large portion of the Ready-Made Garment (RMG) industry’s workforce in Bangladesh. However, instances such as the fire in the Tazreen Fashions factory and collapse of the Rana Plaza building which killed numerous working women, questions the safety and security of the women workforce. Although, the national economy of Bangladesh relies upon the participation of women, yet very little attention is paid to understand the woes/experiences of women and the issues that they confront. To fulfil the research gap and add value to the existing literature, the research paper aims to answer the research question – ‘What issues do female factory workers in Bangladesh confront?’ The research paper explored the three issues – physical, mental and social issues based on evidential support and thorough reflection.
Keywords: physical, mental, social issues, female factory workers, Bangladesh, working women
Physical, Mental and Social Issues of Working Women in Bangladesh – A Case Study of Female Factory Workers
Among the lower-middle-income economies, Bangladesh has constantly strived to change its economy from an import oriented to export, since it gained freedom in 1971 (Akhter et al. 2017a). In the mid-1980s, Bangladesh started a progression of economic changes under the direction of the international monetary agencies to start a new approach based on export orientation (Akhter et al. 2017). The foundation of export-oriented economy resulted in the birth of Ready-Made Garment (RMG) industry, which has made a noteworthy contribution to the monetary development of the nation (Fitch et al. 2018). The industry boasts an income of about $25.49 billion for 2014– 2015 monetary year (Akhter et al. 2017a). Within the industry sector, about four million women work in the RMG business, and women constitute as 50-60 percent of the workforce (Akhter et al. 2017a). This expanding interest of women in the RMG workforce denotes a huge transformation in Bangladeshi society.
