Abstract
The research has identified the global burden associated with the consumption of alcohol as the main problem. Alcohol use disorder and alcohol misuse are common amongst people, and the studies have shown the harmful effect of drinking alcohol such as suicide, injury, deaths, and traffic accidents. Also, research studies have highlighted some of the financial losses and other violent acts that are caused by the intake of alcohol among underage and young adults. Therefore, is need to address the problematic drinking and dependency on alcohol that leads to such accidents, deaths, injuries, and financial losses. This project will try to train the practice nurses to identify problematic drinking by improving their skills in alcohol screening and brief intervention. Practice nurses can then use such skills to help people with alcohol use disorder to reduce alcohol intake.
Introduction
Background
WHO (2018) indicate that worldwide, there are three million deaths every year due to harmful use of alcohol, a figure that represents 5.3% of all deaths. Also, the harmful consumption of alcohol is a causal factor to more than 200 diseases and injury conditions. Overall 5.1% of the global burden of illness and injury is attributable to alcohol, as measured in disability-adjusted life years. Besides deaths and injuries, harmful alcohol use is a significant public health concern because it causes many social, psychological, economic, and medical problems (Carlson, 2017).
Research conducted by Kanny et al. (2015) indicate that in the United States, there was an average of six deaths per day between the year 2010 and 2012 occurring due to alcohol poisoning. The study further breaks down the data to show that three in four of those who died were adults aged from 35 to 64 years. Therefore, deaths leading from alcohol consumption are regarded as the third leading cause of deaths in the United States.
Imani et al. (2017) study indicate that almost 30 people die each day in motor vehicle crashes due to drunk driving in the U.S. Research data further shows that there were a total of 10,076 deaths in the year 2013 due to alcohol-related driving accidents. This number represents 31% of the total annual traffic deaths in the United States. Additionally, a total of $59 billion is spent annually due to alcohol-related crashes (Imani et al., 2017).
