RESEARCH PROPOSAL ON NURSING JOB SATISFACTION
Introduction
Job satisfaction refers to the fulfillment that one derives from his or her job or occupation (Upenieks, 2003). Nursing is one of the occupations that require serious commitment and keenness. As such, it requires passion and the intrinsic motivation to be able to do it perfectly well. Job satisfaction among nurses remains to be a challenging aspect. This is because of the fact that nurses deal with people who are always worried and in health concerns. Those seeking treatment and even those who just come for consultation or even medical checkup present issues that are of grave importance. This is because the issues that lead them to health facilities directly affect their lives.
Research has indicated that over 80% of nurses are not satisfied in their jobs as nurses (Upenieks, 2003). This situation has been attributed to the fact that even though nursing could be paying well and present opportunities for nurses to make money, the job lacks the happiness that other workers such as civil servants or teachers derive from their work. Money in this case has been argued to be the main motivator old many nurses into doing nursing. Even though a good number of nurses would refute this, the fact is that given a chance, a nurse would quit the job and move to another job so as to avoid stress in life and be able to lead a different life (Larrabee et al, 2003). Think of the many situations that nurses find themselves in, for example, struggling to save the lives of a critical patient in vain, handling people who are in extreme pain due to accidents and other ailments, just to mention but a few. The reality is that, nurses have deep rooted sorrow in their hearts and therefore lack satisfaction in their jobs and this explains why sometimes, their performance is nor up to the expectations of the people.
It in this research proposal, we critically look at the best way we can gauge job satisfaction among nurses with regard to Stamps index of job satisfaction. The main parts of this research proposal will include an introduction, The formulation of research questions, the objectives of the study, the hypothesis, research design, sampling of the populations for the study, measures to be used and here, we use stamp’s instrument in measuring the index of satisfaction among nurses, subjects approval, data collection and analysis, funding sources, the budget for the study, presentation of findings and outcomes.
Background Information and Rational the Research Study
The topic of job satisfaction among nurses has been on the minds of many medical administrators. Administrators always wish to see satisfied nurses that love their job and who are more willing to perform their tasks. For this reason, a number of research studies have been conducted on the factors that make nurses in effective in their jobs and also, on how their performance in their jobs can be boosted to realize perfect results in hospitals and health facilities (Larrabee et al, 2003).
The research studies that have been done have examined job satisfaction among nurses by looking at how satisfied patients are with the services they get from the nurses. Investigations have taken this direction because the patients have been found to be a very integral part in determining the job satisfaction among the nurses who serve them in health facilities.
The studies that have been done in this topic have however leaned so much on the side of the nurses’ job requirements without putting much concentration to the other elements suggested by Stamp with regard to the measurement of the index of satisfaction among the nurses. This kind of approach have left the topic unexplored to the maximum and this research study seeks to take care of this shortcomings by taking into full consideration, all the six elements suggested by Stamp in measuring the index of job satisfaction among the nurses (Stamp et al, 1978).
The research study is very important because it seeks to determine the ways that can be adopted by health administrators to ensure that nurses love their work and become more willing to perform it. This is very critical in ensuring the expectations of the people on the part played by nurses are realized. Having nurses who love their jobs would be very important for both the patients and the administrators of the health facilities and even to the nurses themselves. To the nurses, job satisfaction and the love for their work will aid in ensuring keenness in their performance of tasks and this will mean that more lives will be saved due to the fact that quality health care will be ensured. To the administrators, their happiness is to see nurses that love their job and who are satisfied with the job requirements, administrative requirements, autonomy, and pay among other factors that appertains their work. The research on the job satisfaction of the nurses is therefore very important because it helps to shade more light on how the performance of the workers can be increased. To the patients, the research topic is very beneficial because looking at the job satisfaction among nurses with an aim of coming up with the most appropriate ways of improving their performance and making the love their job ensures that they receive quality health care to their happiness (Upenieks, 2003).
