ST PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH SELF HELP GROUP BACKGROUND
The self help group program is a Catholic Church initiative. The formation of self help program in the Archdiocese of Nairobi was first started in the year 1983; the first group was formed in kiriko parish. The program emerged spontaneously from traditional economic activities which were basically farming oriented, this was to quench the thirst of more organized and scientific system which would fit in cash economy.
St Peters Catholic Church is a church under St Joseph Freinademetz Ruai parish, St Peters Catholic Church self help group was formed by Christians of St Peters Catholic Church. The group was formed in the year 2000 and it had 40 members its population has rapidly grown to a present 789 members, the self help group is a model financial service provider owned by Christian communities and managed on Christian values of love and charity .The group is not limited to catholic Christians but it also allows members of other Christian congregation to be part of the group.

DESCRIBTION OF THE CURRENT SYSTEM
St Peters self help group has got a manual system in place whereby all its operations and transactions are carried out manually. Below is an overview of operations taking place in the self help group
* Registration of new members
* Saving of cash by members
* Loan allocation
* Buying of shares
A) Registration of new members: for one to become a member he/she needs to meet the requirements below:-
* should be of 18 yrs of age
* Resident within or occupies land /property within the groups area of operation.
* A Christian who is of acceptable social and moral standards.
Once one has qualified to become a member he/she pays a registration fee of 320/=
To the treasurer who records the member’s information in books of accounts, the new member is also given a membership number and all his/her details are hand written in a new file by the secretary.
