The problem of “goodness” when conducting business in a capitalist economy
Goodness when it comes to our society today, can mean very many things but, its main meaning can be the state of having moral qualities that are according to the norms and Regulations of the society. In the book of “Good person of Szechwan” Brecht seems to have a different contextual meaning of “goodness” and it becomes a very puzzling circumstance. Generally in the text I find that idea of goodness as one who is in isolation. We find the people of Szechwan as people who are into materialism, capitalism, religion, altruism and various contemporary moralities.
Idea of “goodness” at some point has been used to refer to character of the person. People are found to be people full of immorality and bad behaviours. Example; Shen Teh is “good” she brings rice for Mrs Shin, gives her free smokers to a poor man. But her goodness buries her under the weight of obligations. People asking for a reference of character, the carpenter demands payment for his shelves, and also he is forced to go and live in his old tobacco shop. Mainstream notions also deem him evil. Three Gods descend to the town and looking for a good person. They fail to see Shen Teh as a good person. Their explanation of goodness seems not only to be of actions but also of moral demands of a society.
