Khalid Raheem artwork
Our society is dominated by works of art in almost every sector. For this reason, taking a course in art such as Art 30 is an added advantage because it makes me understand the role of art in the society. More specifically, I am interested in taking Art 30 course because I want to learn the relationship between art and activism. I find this very educative and interesting to learn how artists have used their artworks to bring change in the contemporary society through activism and protests. In addition, this is a course with intensive writing which will help me develop my writing skills. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to give an account of my experiences at the Steven Kasher gallery and provide a detailed description of the Khalid Raheem artwork and its significance to the society.
Steven Kasher Gallery in New York is the second museum I have visited after Brooklyn Museum. My grandfather always talked about asain art in my childhood which developed the desire to visit different museums to interact with this kind of art. For this reason, I visited the Brooklyn Museum and took several photographs for future reference and further study. My visit to Steven Kasher gallery was totally educative since I learnt a lot about the artworks on the panther’s movement and activities during the exhibition. This particular museum has an appealing design because the rooms are large, spacious and everything was painted all white. Also, the room has about 43 artworks per section, but the total number of artworks in the room were approximately 136. In terms of lighting, vivid and well-refracted lights were well focused on the photographs making them shine and appear very beautiful and aesthetic.
My choice of the Khalid Raheem artwork was influenced by the Black Panther’s exhibition. I was lucky that I visited the Steven Kasher Gallery during the “Power of the people the black panthers in photographs by Stephen Shames and graphics by Emory Douglas” exhibition. This exhibition had two purposes which were, first, to celebrate and mark the 50th anniversary of the Black Panther Party. Second, to launch the publication of Power of the people the black panthers in photographs by Stephen Shames and graphics by Emory Douglas. The exhibition featured over 50 black and white photographs of the Panthers by Stephen Shames and Emory Douglas. Among these photographs was the Khalid Raheem artwork which caught my attention since it was the first masterpiece during the exhibition.
The real name of the Khalid Raheem artwork is “Panthers March at Defermery Path--Oakland--Rally to Free Huey of 1968” by Stephen Shames. The artwork measures the size of 8 by 10 inches, and it was printed on the vintage gelatin silver print medium. The photo of this artwork traces its originality from West Oakland. I choose this artwork because my uncle was one of the Panthers and he used to tell me stories of how the police would mistreat the blacks. Thus, this is a painting that formed a link with my memories and past experiences which contributed to the interest in studying more about the artwork. Historically, this artwork was published at a time when black panthers had formed a party to fight against self-discrimination, social injustices such as police brutality and economic inequalities.
The most significant element that attracted me to this painting is the seriousness in the facial expression of the Panthers. This was a sign that the artwork was a representation of a serious historical occurrence that I was interested in research about. This artwork also got me thinking about the reason the Panthers had assembled for the March; was it because of the police, the black or their leader. Since I wanted to know the answers to these questions, I choose to study this artwork. This artwork brought out i...
