Executive Summary
As a hospital system administrator, I will create a business plan to implement the HoverMatt Transfer Technology to improve patient handling during labor and delivery. First, I will describe the project's purpose and organizational needs. I will also conduct a cost analysis by providing a three-year financial projection that includes the potential funding sources for the project ranging from government grants, debts, and equity. Subsequently, the project’s initial stages will entail comprehensive planning to create and organize a dedicated health staff team, evaluate the market size and competition, and marketing and sales strategies. Moreover, I will organize programs for HoverTech International to train the health staff on implementing the HoverMatt Air Transfer Technology to reap maximum benefits in labor and delivery services. While the market size is expected to increase due to the continued demand for health services, competition is expected to be low as only finite health facilities can afford the technology. I will also market the HoverTech Air Transfer technology enable services through social media, print media, and search engine optimization. The business plan aims to reduce costs while improving care quality and health outcomes through improved and safe patient handling.
Hovermatt Air Transfer Technology for Patient Handing in Labour and Delivery
Technological growth in the healthcare sector has improved modern healthcare systems by introducing vast and sophisticated medical equipment in short-term care units, laboratories, intensive care units, labor and delivery units, and operation theatres. The rise in the use of robotic surgical systems to mechanical or powered assistive devices that reduce the manual work required in patient handling tasks such as moving, transferring, turning, and bathing have had tremendous impact and growth through improved patient outcomes in the healthcare sector. As such, technological innovations have a broad range of advantages, such as reducing the cost of care through improved patient safety, task execution times, and decreased patient discomfort and pain. Using lateral transfer devices over the traditional draw sheet method has been one of the best patient-handling devices that improve the quality of care and patient safety. The devices make patient handling easy and improve comfort, time efficiency, and safety for the patients and providers while reducing the risk of injuries. As the hospital system administrator, I will create a plan to implement the Hovermatt Air Transfer Technology for Patient Handing in Labour and Delivery.
Purpose of the Project and Organisational Needs
The integration of technology and engineering improves healthcare provision. However, the healthcare industry lacks proper digitization and mechanization in the emergency department. Nurses, among other healthcare providers, work under high pressure to meet patient needs. Additionally, labor and delivery services are emotionally and physically demanding for the healthcare staff. Ideally, healthcare professionals are immensely responsible for caring for and supporting women who bring new life into the world. They work under high intensity owing to bedside care and meeting the physical demands required to move and position patients, especially after anesthesia (HoverTech, 2023). The health workers move patients to different units after assessments. For example, the nurses transfer patients from stretchers and delivery beds.
Besides patients, manual handling poses work-related injuries to healthcare workers. Manual handling affects patients’ safety by increasing the risks of falling and other adverse outcomes that lower the quality of care and health outcomes. Additionally, manual patient handling poses occupational risks for health workers, including Work-related Musculoskeletal disorders (WRMDs that arise from intensive patient handling. Garzillo et al. (2020) assert that 55% of lower back pain, 44% of shoulder pain, 42% of neck pain, 26% of upper extremity pain, and 36% of lower extremity among healthcare providers result from manual handling. Lower back pain results in about 50% of all occupational injuries from poor postures and manual lifting among healthcare workers. Moreover, healthcare facilities encounter burdens related to manual patient handling. Specifically, hospitals encounter financial costs from legal claims when patients seek compensation. Secondly, injured healthcare workers have decreased performance and productivity. As a result, there is a high nurse-patient ratio which negatively impacts the healthcare facility’s quality of care and patient safety.
As the administrator, my plan aims to reduce financial costs associated with labor, medical risks, insurance, and legal penalties through improved patient handling. The plan will invest in Air Transfer Mattress to improve patient handling in labor and delivery services, allowing it to tap into the rapidly growing health technology market and have a competitive advantage against potential rivals in the health industry. Founded in 1997 by David D. Travis, HoverTech International makes and sells Air Transfer Mattresses across global health sectors (HoverTech, 2023). The plan seeks to collaborate with HoverTech International to achieve the vision for safe patient handling and movement in healthcare through patients’ or caregivers’ insights, education, and innovation.
I will also seek collaboration among the relevant stakeholders to promote the project’s success. In this case, teamwork among the health personnel providing labor and delivery services and support from the organization's management team will promote success. I will organize a program for HoverTech International to train the health staff on implementing the HoverMatt Air Transfer Technology to reap maximum benefits in labor and delivery services. The healthcare staff should also comprehend this technology’s implementation processes, business standards, guidelines, and regulations. While implementing modern technology in healthcare can be expensive, designing a value-based model will be vital to minimizing the expenditure on the invested capital, the technology’s maintenance, and staff training (Hyereci et al., 2023). In this case, the HoverMatt Air Transfer Mattress will be vital for the labor and delivery services to offer the best available care in the highly demanding environment and the entire health facility.
Proposed Services or Procedures
Labor and delivery services face risks associated with manual patient handling. However, adopting modern technology to mechanize patient handling will improve patient safety and the facility’s quality of care. This plan will implement the HoverMatt Air Transfer Technology to improve patient handling. The technology will make a difference in patients and health workers' lives through improved efficiency by reducing the manual force required to move patients (80-90%) (HoverTech International, 2023). A case study in Uva Culpeper Hospital claims that the healthcare facility reduced restricted and lost working days by 96% and 85%, respectively, in all units from 2012 to 2014 after adopting HoverMatt Air Mattress in patient handling. A second case study in Moffitt Cancer Center asserts that the implementation of HoverMatt Air Mattress reduced the healthcare costs associated with lifting injuries by 96% and continued to drop more by 98% with the addition of more equipment and continued staff training (HoverTech International, 2023).
Labor and delivery services will also benefit immensely from the HoverMatt Air technology. The proposed services in the unit entail managing the challenges relating to transferring and positioning patients safely. The technology uses air technology to improve safety while handling patients. For instance, HoverTech's Single and Double Coated -Patient Use HoverMatt Half-Matts are suitable for transferring C-section patients to and fro the operation table. The healthcare providers also use the HoverMatt to help postoperative mothers during recovery for comfortable and easier boosting and positioning when confined in bed.
Subsequently, the Q2Roller Lateral Turning device ensures that the caregivers will reposition patients in labor to prevent aortocaval compression syndrome on the baby and the mother. The Q2Roller uses air technology to turn patients in seconds without requiring manual effort to meet patient needs in emergent circumstances (HoverTech International, 2023). As such, the technology will promote safe patient handling, allowing the health staff to maintain high efficiency to keep up with the departments’ turnover rate. Safe patient handling in lifting, transferring, boosting, turning, and positions will prevent injuries among patients and healthcare providers.
