Relationship Between Motivation and Emotion Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation Course Number and Name Instructor’s Name Due Date Motivation and Emotion Emotion is a psychophysiological experience that involves expressive behaviors, physiological arousal, and conscious experience (Griffiths, 2017). It is highly associated with the mood of a person, personality, temperament, and disposition. The behavior of an individual is directed and energized by motivation. Therefore, emotion provides the affective part of motivation, which can be either positive or negative (Ashkanasy et al. 2016). Motivation is what causes people to move or act on a certain feeling. The emotion can be anger, happiness, or sadness. These feelings arise from external causes such as the sudden appearance of a dangerous animal, causing panic and fear. They can also result from thoughts of a person or instances. The cause of action after an individual experience these feelings is well described as motivation. The emotion elicits action tendency, which alters thinking. An individual cannot create the state on purpose, rather experience passions that happen at an instance (Griffiths, 2017). Therefore, emotion defines the motivation to behave in a certain way. Communication of emotion is through facial expressions, which are mostly unlearned. However, culture is responsible for specific variations in facial expressions. The culture also contributes to the influences that account for the intensity and persistence of specific behavior. There is a direct link of behavior and the source of that behavior, which is emotional factors. These factors initialize the tendency to strive for satisfaction or to change the individual’s state, which is called achievement motivation (Pervin, 2015). Therefore, a person’s behavior revolves on gaining self-esteem, persistence despite failure, and developing individual responsibility. How Motivation and Emotion Concepts Influence Each Other Motivation can be biological, such as motivation for food or water, while other motivations are personal and social. These are motivation for social acceptance or motivation to achieve something that would bring personal satisfaction (Brunstein & Heckhausen, 2018). One concept is that there is a tendency to activate or energize behavior towards a particular goal. Arousal of emotion also activates a specific action since motives often go together with emotions. Another concept is that some basic emotions have the property to motivate on their own — an example of happiness which motivates a person to aim for better results and performance. The concept of reward or punishment involves both emotion and motivation. Pervin (2015) states that specific motivated behavior is rewarded or punished by emotion. Therefore, at times, motivation influences emotion as a result. The most significant influence of motivation is emotion. However, there is another influence which is having a goal. For instance, a friend trying to lose weight feels motivated by the goal previously set. However, some may argue that the goals are emotionally set since there exists a link to the desire, which is an emotion. Whatever angle one may choose to look at it, emotion and motivation are strongly connected. According to Heckhausen (2018), it is plausible to note that the most substantial aspect of motivation is emotion. There is an expressive component which describes how an individual behaves as a result of emotion. However, the theories of motivation may seem more appropriate to certain people. The decisions human beings make, whether large or small, have been affiliated with the emotions we experience every day of our lives. However, this concept is subject to discussion and misconceptions. Misconceptions about the Importance and Influence of Emotions in Decision-Making Decision-making is the process of choosing a preferred course of action among a set of alternative options. Every day humans are faced with instances of decision-making, which is an essential element of their action. The relationship between emotions and decision-making is very significant and cannot face neglect in modern-day actions. However, there are misconceptions about the role of emotions in decision-making. One is that emotions have an insignificant and negligible role in the process of making decisions. Another misconception is that emotions have a destructive and disruptive effect in optimal decision-making. It means that they undermine the real process if making decisions (Lerner et al. 2015). Lerner (2015) argues that usual psychological practice demonstrates that when people face certain emotions such as anger, joy, or sadness, they tend to make individual decisions as opposed to when they are composed.
