The different behavioral characteristics of the disabilities under IDEA
Disability
Characteristics
Autism
Autism is a disability that can impede a child’s academic achievement. A child with autism has difficulties with both actions and interactions. A child’s ability to communicate verbally and nonverbally is impaired, which has an impact on his or her socialization skills (Teachings in Education, 2018). Additionally, a child engages in activities that are already familiar or established, thus, a child does not want these activities to be altered or modified (Categories, n.d.). This disability reminds me of a character from the Netflix series “The Good Doctor.” Dr. Shawn Murphy has autism, but he has a strong memory. He has communication issues and prefers to do things in a systematic and book-like manner.
Deaf-blindness
Deaf-blindness affects both hearing and vision in a child. A child is deprived of information that could be obtained through hearing and seeing. As a result, deaf-blindness is yet another disability that can obstruct a child's academic achievement (Categories, n.d.). I have not met anyone with this disability, but I assume it is difficult to live with this type of disability. I have very poor eyesight, and this alone has caused me a lot of problems; imagine how much more difficult it will be for people who are deaf-blind.
Deafness
According to the World Health Organization (2021), a person with deafness has an immense loss of hearing. As a result of hearing loss, a deaf person cannot understand verbal language (Teachings in Education, 2018). This disability can impede a child's academic achievement; however, strategies and devices to assist deaf people are already available.
Developmental delay (DD)
A child with a developmental delay may suffer physical, cognitive, social, and emotional consequences (Teachings in Education, 2018). One of the reasons I enrolled in the course was because I have a cousin who has this disability. His disability, according to the doctors, is caused by a lack of oxygen during his mother’s delivery. As a consequence, he had a developmental delay. He is currently 32 years old and he remains under the care of his parents.
Emotional disturbance (ED)
A child with emotional disturbance finds it difficult to learn because of persistent behavioral issues (Teachings in Education, 2018). A child suffering from emotional disturbance is unable to maintain relationships and exhibits inappropriate feelings and emotions (Categories, n.d.). In 2019, I had a student who was suffering from an emotional disturbance. Jake is his name, and he struggles with concentration and academic performance. He is also aggressive and frequently throws tantrums. Due to his behaviors, he is withdrawn and his classmates are scared of him.
Hearing impairment
A child with hearing impairment, whether permanent or intermittent, has trouble learning (Categories, n.d.). When I was in Elementary, I had a schoolmate who wears a hearing aid. He was prone to bullying but later on, it was already normalized.
Intellectual disability
A child with an intellectual disability has general intelligence that is below average. A child with an intellectual disability also struggles with cognition and life functions (Teachings in Education, 2018). A TV show entitled “My Special Tatay,” features a character whose name is Boyet whom I believe, has an intellectual disability because his intellectual capacity has not developed. He still acts and thinks like a child. He is unable to communicate effectively and perform tasks appropriate for his age.
Multiple disabilities (MDS)
Multiple disabilities occur when different impairments, such as intellectual disability and visual impairment, occur concurrently. A child with multiple disabilities frequently requires care for his or her entire life. Some children may have a hard time reading, gasping for air, viewing, and performing other activities (Teachings in Education, 2018).
Orthopedic impairment
A drastic impairment of the bones or muscles that has a detrimental effect on a child's academic performance is referred to as an orthopedic impairment. A child who has an orthopedic impairment may be extremely burned and suffers from deformations, bone malformations, and distortions (Categories, n.d.). Outside our parish church, there is a beggar with no limb. I discovered that he was unable to attend school due to his disability, leaving him with the option of begging for money.
Other health impairment (OHI)
Other health impairments entail a wide range of conditions. These conditions include a reduction in strength, energy, or attentiveness as an outcome of acute health issues (Categories, n.d.). I was a big fan of a vlogger with Tourette syndrome. He exhibits unusual behaviors that may scare other people but he is also very compassionate and persistent, which makes me admire him.
Specific learning disability (SLD)
A specific learning disability is an issue with fundamental psychological processes. SLD affects a child's capacity to think, communicate, read, write, and do simple arithmetic. A child may have difficulty processing information (Teachings in Education, 2018). In 2019, I had a student with a specif...
