Introduction
Just like any other field, the health sector evolves in response to developing and new health concerns to attend to, along with technological advancements or changes in the sector's environment. Such changes ought to be accompanied by corresponding policy adaptations, and where such a move is overlooked, disaster looms. In the odd setting that policies dictate what happens, as opposed to changes and advancements in the sector prescribing policy changes, the ability of the health sector to swiftly respond to trends is limited (Gopee, 2019). One case that points to this problem is that of advanced nursing practice roles, which are yet to be established in most parts of the world, despite there being the capacity and necessity to have them.
Problem Statement
Advanced nursing practice has emerged as a necessary component of the healthcare process, although it stands at the moment, it might be long before the practice's roles are fully established and backed in policy and funding. Just like in Canada's case, most countries' health care faces a shortage of professionals, rising costs, new technology, and aging populations, and making dire the need for advanced nursing practitioners. As asserted by a radiation oncology physician, “The nurse practitioner role greatly benefits doctors’ practice because patients need a great deal of support for symptom management and docs are simply not prepared to do it, either in terms of time or up-to-date knowledge.” Advanced Clinical Practice has even come to be heralded as chief among the solutions to the service delivery and workforce challenges bedeviling the health service England, though not regulated (Fulton, Lyon, & Goudreau, 2014). However, despite more than 70 countries having shown some interest in regularizing advanced practice nursing, the practice has met challenges that are yet to be resolved.
Background
While the effective use of APRNs in healthcare systems presents an opportunity to reduce cost and improve on quality, bringing the advanced practice nursing roles into life is a journey. Such a revelation reflects on the fact that advanced practice nursing is undoubtedly a necessary and effective way of solving most of the challenges in the health sector. However, it also points to the reluctance of stakeholders to fast track the establishment of advanced nursing practice roles in policy, and also in funding. The discussion leads to the question as to why it takes long to regulate the practice, with overwhelming evidence pointing to its suitability and effectiveness (Dennison, 2017).
