Research suggests that the alphabet and awareness of phonology are good predictors of successful literacy development among children. The human brain uses a phonological code to process written and spoken language. Linguistic information is represented as a set of unique codes. Each language has its own sounds with specific rules guiding the combination of these sounds into words and syllables (Gort, 2019). So, the best time to introduce the two students to the English language is when they can manipulate a language at the level of phonology. In other words, children should be introduced to the English language as soon as they can reflect on the components contained in spoken words and not only understand the meaning of the words.
To predict the chances of success in learning L2, that is, the English Language, parents and teachers can use phonological awareness measures. Research has shown that the measures of phonological awareness predict the success of understanding L2. This means that teachers should encourage parents of the English language learners to assist them at home to develop literacy experience in the first language at home (Ortega, 2020). This will contribute to the ease of understanding English as L2.
