A wise employer should always follow the appropriate termination procedure when dealing with employees. Some of the procedural errors that were made in the handling of Joan’s case are as follows. First, the management had not kept in place fair work regulations and guiding principle. This is supposed to enable employees to know what is expected of them in the organization (Burchett et.al, 2006). In the case of Joan, if there were work rule in place she should have been informed for lateness from the first date she came to work late and not just terminating her work.
The other error made was that the management was not fair when using progressive corrective measures. Instead of presenting Joan with termination letter they should have given her a warning and the last chance. Maybe if she was warned and given the last opportunity she could have changed and worked much harder.
Since Joan claims that she has always performed her duties well then I would take the time to decide on her case. First, I would inquire from the other staff to find out if she is telling the truth then I would judge her accordingly. Since, she has not been served with a warning before I would recommend that they give her the last chance (Fallon et.al, 2007). Also, I would recommend the organization to set rules for discipline and all employees should be informed the penalties for breaking them.
