Diversity and Health Assessments
TJ is a middle-aged and pregnant lesbian seeking healthcare services. It is necessary to provide healthcare services aligning with spiritual, socioeconomic, cultural, and lifestyle expectations. All her risks and needs should be considered since she is likely to face challenges that vary from those of heterosexual women (Tian & Shen, 2019). She can be affected by barriers, such as economic, political, and social obstacles including stigmatization, discrimination, and homophobia. Poor family support, lack of community, and emotional challenges can affect the accessibility of healthcare services (Pereira et al., 2022). Since the patient conceived through donor insemination, she is likely to face social discrimination and increased dependence on peers. The dependency on family networks is likely to be limited making it difficult for her to receive the necessary social support.
The patient is likely to face increased socio-cultural challenges, including poor acceptance. Other barriers are discriminatory attitudes, disclosure, confidentiality, and negative perception. It is important to be sensitive about various issues that affect the lesbian population when interacting with the patient. These issues include confidentiality, privacy, stigmatization, poor social support, and family structure (Bodnar & Tornello, 2019). It is also important to avoid questions likely to affect the well-being of the patient or create a negative perception. Being sensitive to these issues would help provide culturally sensitive care and ensure the provision of the best care.
Several targeted questions can be directed to the pregnant lesbian to facilitate the evaluation of the health risks and evaluate health history.
1 Do you abuse substances, drink alcohol excessively, or smoke?
2 Have you ever taken a mammogram and when was the last time it was taken?
3 Please explain your mental health including negative thoughts and depression feelings.
