Adherence to Antihypertensive Medication and Erectile Dysfunction Among African American Men in Rural Southwest, Mississippi
If one talks about one of the most discussed issues, then hypertension is going to be the most frequent one (American Heart Association, 2013). The significance of the subject can be measured by the fact that it has been discussed both at the national as well as the international level regarding the sort of issues that it tends to create (American Heart Association, 2013). The issue and ailment are such that it is likely to affect anyone regardless of their age as well as their race and gender (American Heart Association, 2010). In the United States alone, about 30 % of the population has suffered from this ailment at one instance or another showing how important it is to make sure that people have sufficient awareness about the ailment (American Heart Association, 2010). Despite the fact that it is a common issue, not many people have the level of awareness with regards to the way hypertension is bound to affect the human body and what are some of its long term health effects (American Heart Association, 2010). Erectile dysfunction is one of the adverse effects of this problem and as per some estimates; most of the people who are suffering from this ailment of African American descendent are facing this problem at a more regular level (American Heart Association, 2010).
Conclusions from the Data
The underlying purpose of this study was to make sure that some relationship can be examined between the adherence to the medication related to hypertension and the erectile dysfunction (American Heart Association, 2010). The area of study was specifically American rural areas of South Western Mississippi, and the rationale was to see whether there is the existence of any such relationship between the usage of the medication and this lingering medical problem (American Heart Association, 2010). The nature of the study was such that obviously quantitative analysis has to be carried out and the technique that was being used for the analysis was descriptive cross-sectional correlation design (American Heart Association, 2010). At the same time, survey responses were also designed to make sure that the data collection as per the adherence can be carried out with regards to the perception and the ailment of the erectile dysfunction (American Heart Association, 2013). The inclusion a criterion that was being used was as followed.
* Having this problem of hypertension
* Among African American men
* The region that was selected specifically was Southwestern area of the Mississippi.
As far as the inclusion from the data is concerned, the data from the scales was included within the instrument, and the results were scored in accordance to the respective keys, and the analysis was carried out with the usage of the IBM SPSS 19 (Al-Qazaz, 2010). As far as the sample characterizes care concerned about 66 survey responses were being used during the study, and all the respondents that were part of the study were African American who was using some anti hypertensive medication (Al-Qazaz, 2010). The age group among which all the respondents belong was estimated to be between 26 to 79 years old (Al-Qazaz, 2010).
Coming towards the modification scale that was being used during the whole process, the Morisky, Green and Levine's modified medication adherence scale was being used to make sure that the evaluation is carried out whether there exists any relationship among the selected group of people (Al-Qazaz, 2010). Coming towards the way testing of the relationship was supposedly carried out, then the idea was based on the adherence and the diagnosis of the erectile dysfunction among the people who are facing hypertension and were using some hypertension adherence medication for the given period (Al-Qazaz, 2010). Coming towards the way testing of the relationship was carried out, and then Pearson Correlation Coefficient was being used during the whole process to determine the extent of the relationship that exists among the variables (Alqadi, 2017). Looking closely at the Pearson Correlation coefficient, the relationship that was witnessed among the variables was found out to be considerably negative (American Heart Association, 2010). Based on these observations and some of the other statistical methods that were being used during the research. At the same time, to make sure that further statistical validity can be provided to the research, the Chi-Square test was being used to measure the test of the independence that existed among the variables (American Heart Association, 2013). Tthe idea behind the premises of the research was to make sure that significant statistical methods are being used to ensure the validity of the results (American Heart Association, 2010). Based on these findings, the conclusion was reached that there exists considerable evidence to prove that there exists a positive relationship between the adherence to the medication that is being used during the hypertension and the problem of erectile dysfunction that is faced among men (Alqadi, 2017).
Implications for the Nursing
As is the case with any medical observation, there are nursing implications that are needed to be kept in mind to make sure that the related consequences are understood, and some coping mechanism is developed with regards to the way medication is supposed to be provided to the patients (Alqadi, 2017). One thing that is needed to be noted when one talks about the nursing implications is that they are not necessarily the medically related side effects of any medication. Instead, the nursing implications are some of the things that nurses have to make sure that they get to resolve at their end to ensure that better treatment is being offered to the patient for certain diseases and how they can take care of themselves (Alqadi, 2017).
Limitations
As is the case with any research, there are considerable limitations in case of this research that is needed to be taken into consideration (Abalos et al. 2014). One of the key things that are acting as a handicap for the research is that how the sample size is rather limited keeping in mind the overall population of the area and the way they are supposed to be looked after (American Heart Association, 2013). The other thing that is needed to be kept in mind is that there is not much of a discussion regarding what sort of medications are the ones that are likely to aggravate this problem (American Heart Association, 2013). Hyperactive medications are such that they come in a diverse category and to club them together by few statistical observations is problematic (American Heart Association, 2010). Thus the research needs to narrow down the sort of medications that are causing this ailment (Abalos et al. 2014).
Recommendations for Future Research
Keeping in mind the limitations and the constraints of the research, despite the fact that it has provided a solid background, there is a need for considerable future research (American Heart Association, 2013). The key thing that...
