Prostate Cancer Treatment and Prevention
Prostate cancer appears to be the most common cancer among men in the US after skin cancer. It is the main cause of cancer deaths. Older men at the age of 65 and above are the main patient of the killer abnormality. Prostate cancer is mainly adenocarcinomas, beginning to multiply in cells with release of mucus and fluids. Symptoms of prostate cancer do not emerge early but in advanced conditions frequent urination and weak flow of urine are observed (Wolf et al., 2010). Not all men diagnosed with prostate cancer succumb to the ailment, instead, majority receive treatment and resume their normal way of life.
There are no causative agents that have been directly linked to prostate cancer. The suspected causing agents of prostate cancer include: age, genetics, diet, medication, obesity, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), Agent Orange, and enzyme PRSS3 linked to aggressive prostate cancer (Hugosson et al., 2010). Prostate cancer is considered rampant among the aged. Cancer risks are genetically connected where certain racial groups have high chances to suffer prostate cancer than others. Some foods are considered effective in preventing prostate cancer; soy, selenium, and green tea are good examples. Anti-inflammatory drugs are considered to cause prostate cancer. Gonorrhea is an STI which increases the susceptibility of the infected to suffer from prostate cancer.
In early stages, prostate cancer victims can undergo the following treatments: radical prostatectomy- which is the surgical removal of prostate, brachytherapy- which involves surgical insertion of radioactive seeds into the prostate gland, conformal radiotherapy and intensity modulated radiotherapy.
The advanced stages of prostate cancer, a combination of radiotherapy and hormone therapy are required to treat the disorder.
