The federal and the state governments use various theories to justify the application of punishment in the maintenance of order in the society. The order is attained through the adherence to its role within the social contract in the society. The theories connected with the punishments in the federal and state governments retributive and utilitarian forms of punishment for the criminals. Utilitarian type of punishments in the structure of social contract enables the punishments to reduce future indulgence in criminal activities. Punishments always can shame or destroy the defendants not supporting the severity connected to criminal punishment as defendants never lose their rights to freedom and liberty. State and federal objective of punishment include the penalty and the outcomes for the offenses committed by the offenders. The correction sector enhances the protection of the community through the operation of the safe, secure facilities putting the offenders under strong and fair practices in the society (Blankenship, Smoyer, Bray & Mattocks, 2005). The punishments ensure that the offenders are corrected for the particular crimes they have committed in the society. The federal and state governments have various objectives within the correctional facilities giving penalties to every offense committed by an offender. There are punishments within every correction facility and the punishments assure that the wrongdoers are passably punished for the crime. The benefits of the punishments are the prevention of the offenses by discouraging the criminals and others to commit the same crimes in the community. Punishments are strict, dire, and rigorous transforming the criminals not to commit their mistakes again. They give room for reconciliation for the offender to reform if they are willing to conform to the society. Other objectives of the state and federal punishments are to help the offenders live a good life within the society after getting sick in incarceration for longer periods of time. They also provide the criminals with good social interaction ideologies to enable them to be successful in their projects in the community. It assists in the installation of discipline in criminals through deterrence.
