Lymphoma: Approach to Precise Diagnosis and Targeted Treatment
Lymphoma means cancer of the lymphatic system and lymph nodes. Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin are the main types of lymphoma. “This type of cancer starts in the white blood cells, or lymphocytes.” (MacGill). While in the blood circulatory system, it metastasizes to various body parts. Lymphoma occurs at any age, and it is a major cause of cancer in teenagers. The most significant symptom of lymphoma is the unusual swelling of lymph nodes which persists for a long time. Unlike many other types of cancer, lymphoma is often treatable provided a clear-cut diagnosis is made. Different procedures are used to diagnose lymphoma. After physical examinations, tests are conducted by doctors to confirm whether lymphoma is present.
Physical examination involves checking for swollen lymph nodes in body parts like underarm, groin, chin, abdomen and neck. Blood biopsy is a test that confirms the cells present in a sample of the patient’s blood. This data gives doctors significant clues about the correct treatment. A sample of bone marrow may as well be used to test lymphoma “A bone marrow aspiration and biopsy procedure involves inserting a needle into your hipbone to remove a sample of bone marrow. The sample is analyzed to look for lymphoma cells.”
