Humankind was evil and sinful. The cost of sinfulness is death. God sent his only son as a ransom to pay the price, which was death (Berger, 2019). Jesus died for everyone so that when one believes in him, they are free from sin and the consequences of sin. Christian worldview holds that death for Jesus was like a ransom paid for salvation for people. Redemption started from the period of Exodus from Egypt (Nelson, 2020). God promised to save the Israelites from slavery and take them to the promised land of Canaan. Redemption was comprised of suffering, death, and resurrection. People were to suffer and die but never resurrect like Jesus. The resurrection was the eventual symbol of the superiority of God and defeating death as a consequence of sin. This was a victory over sin and death. Biblical The Bible describes redemption as freedom from sinfulness, paid by the blood of Jesus. According to 1 Corinthians 6:20, the bible says, "For you were bought at a price; therefore, glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's." Before redemption, people are believed to have been living in a sinful bondage (Nelson, 2020). They are believed to have been slaves of sin and Satan. The sacrificial death of Jesus means paying for sins by death. Romans 6:18 states, "And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness." Men (and women) exchanged hands from slaves of Satan to righteousness (Berger, 2019). The Bible mentions redemption as an act of salvation of the people in various parts of the New Testament. The Old Testament of the bible refers to God as a redeemer when he saves the people from different situations of bondage and slavery. Theological In non-religious usage, redemption means setting someone free from captivity through paying a ransom. In the Christian worldview, people are born sinful and separate from God. Before salvation, the whole of humankind is believed to have been slaves of sin and Satan. The death and crucifixion of Jesus acted as the ransom (Zavada, 2019). The payment of the ransom, as part of the redemption, included the suffering of Jesus. The two more critical factors about redemption doctrine include that redemption happens when a person accepts Christ and that the redemption process was complete with the resurrection of Jesus, which signaled the defeat of death (Nelson, 2020). The humankind was supposed to perish, but redemption brought them back to God and life. Jesus, as the sacrifice, acted as a mediator between God and humankind, offering himself to die as a price for redemption. Historical The biblical history of redemption is commonly about delivering Israelites from Egypt, where they were trapped as slaves. God as a redeemer can also be ascribed to the Babylonian captivity of Israel. Exodus 6.6 states that, “I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment” (Berger, 2019). The great exodus from Egypt to Israel was a historical act of redemption and showed the earliest moments and incidences where God saved the Israelites from slavery. Redemption and the Problem of Sin Biblically, sin leads to death as a punishment. Salvation leads to eternal life, freedom from sin, and wisdom. Humankind is sinful; hence it needs salvation from sin (Zavada, 2019). The fate of humanity was death; hence, this was the price that was to be paid. When Jesus died on the cross, he died on behalf of everyone (Berger, 2019).
