Limiting Population Growth for Planet Sustainability
Traditionally, more people implied increased creativity, diverse talents, and advanced innovations; today, it implies less for all. The 21st century is an era when global warming is bringing back the Malthusian theory into perspective as hunger, water shortages, and droughts continue to terrorize global populations, especially in the developing world. The global population has exponentially risen while resources decline similarly that the UN estimates that by 2050, at least 4 billion people will face severe water scarcity (Engelman, 2009). As populations continue to grow, resources will continue to be scarce; pollution levels drastically rise, the effects of global warming continue to ravage the world, and available arable land acreage reduce. Therefore, people should be encouraged to limit population growth until the planet can sustainably maintain it to avoid continued wastage and overexploitation of resources, lower carbon emissions, slow down global warming, and combat climate change.
Continued global population growth will continue to increase the nature and extent of global warming and pollution. At the current trend, the UN estimates that by 2043, about 4 billion people in the world will be living in water-scarce designated nations (Engelman, 2009). It implies that fewer people will have clean water to drink, severe water shortage for herders in the horn of Africa, and sporadic droughts ravaging more people. Therefore, the world needs to champion policies like China’s One-Child policy to control the global population growth rate. Such policies will help reduce the global population by reducing individual family sizes and, by extension, global consumption levels (Warren, 2015). As a result of reduced family sizes, the turnover per capita carbon footprint. Reducing the carbon footprint will slow environmental degradation and help to conserve resources for future generations.
Population dynamics, such as age, growth rate, aging, and general decline, are vital in determining the global population size. Despite the population size expanding, the size of the earth is not expanding, and there are only so many resources to support this rising population. As a result, the number of consumers and the measure and disposition of their consumption are also increasing shockingly (Cumming, 2016). This projected continued growth in the global populace will have unprecedented effects on the environment, especially since greenhouse gas emissions will continue to rise. Pollution will also increase, eroding numerous ecosystems and causing unforeseen and unpredictable environmental effects (Bradshaw & Brook, 2014). These effects will continue to cause such predicaments as continued rising temperatures, reduced resources for future generations, and escalated environmental degradation. Thus, the global population should be controlled to help conserve the environment forcefully.
Climate change has resulted in increased erratic weather patterns and global disease pandemics. The continued growth of the global population has hastened climate change by increasing carbon footprint and rising atmospheric temperatures. For instance, rising global temperatures have created a ripe environment for diseases like Ebola and the recent Covid-19 pandemic, which further increases the global resources and economic burden (Vasuki, 2020). Sensible and humane population growth control measures are necessary to solve these issues and lessen the burden on the global environment. Governments across the globe should encourage couples to plan their families, the youth to avoid premarital sex, and practicing safe sex to help control the population growth rate (Vasuki, 2020; Cohen, 2017). Therefore, controlling the global population should be a government-led initiative in individual nations to ensure resource and environmental sustainability.
Overall, the global population is growing at an extremely alarming rate. At the current growth rate, about 4 billion people will face severe water shortages globally by 2050
