Researchers have associated harsh and long prison sentences with increased recidivism (Cunningham, 2014). For example, Gendreau et al., (2001 in Cunningham 2014) observed that recidivism was higher among imprisoned offenders, compared to those committed to community-based sentences. Such observations and concerns have motivated state governments to introduce alternative sentences to incarceration. This paper will discuss how effective the following alternatives to incarceration are: intensive supervision; Boot Camps and Electronic Monitoring.
Intensive Supervision
Bellesa & Hanser (2012) state thatsSupervision of offenders is the most common form of criminal sanction in Western societies (Woldgabreal, Day, & Ward, 2014). It offers a non-custodial option for the sentencing of a vast number of offenders of less serious crimes. According to Woldgabreal et al., (2014), supervision allows prisoners to be released back to the community to continue serving their terms out of prison. This helps to maintain the capacities of the prisons. Andrews & Bonta (2006) have argued that supervision prevents offenders from experiencing the negative effects of incarceration while also being held accountable for their criminal conduct (Woldgabreal et al., 2014). Supervision allows offenders to remain in contact with their families. Offenders under supervision have the potential to remain as productive members of society, unlike their incarcerated counterparts.
