In the mid-1950s, individuals began protesting against discrimination and racial segregation in the U.S. In the process, they developed the civil rights movement that gained national prominence. Such movement was based on the efforts to free slaves from oppressors by eradicating slavery institutions. Slaves had been emancipated due to the Civil War, after which the amendment of the Constitution ensured that slaves were given fundamental civil rights. However, even with such rights, individuals still struggled to achieve federal protection because of the violation of such rights. The protests that took place between the 1950s and 1960s were non-violent; thus, they rendered the segregation of public facilities by race as useless. Such explains why such civil rights movement was successful – particularly leading to the enactment of the equal-rights legislation during the period of Reconstruction. Most civil rights laws were enacted in 1964 and 1965, which proved victorious for the strugglers. However, during the same period, black activists in the military had also begun realizing that the struggle was more of a liberation movement as well as the fight for freedom. The battle also entailed the confrontation of cultural, political, and enduring economic issues causing racial oppression. In relation, the significant movement includes the Brown versus Board of Education in 1954 and the March on Washington in 1963, that led to the enactment of vital legislation in the U.S.
