Critical reflection on fake news presentation
Our fake news piece is a TV broadcast news package. A recent study defined fake news “to be news articles that are intentionally and verifiably false, and could mislead readers” (Allcott and Gentzkow, 2017). We aimed to incorporate slippery slope fallacies (Morris, 2007) to run our piece about an anti-UK and Megxit package. We utilise rhetoric and a flawed argument as our core tactics to portray the elusive slope arguments.
Fox News inspires the presentation style and tone of the broadcast. According to Lewis (2019), ‘Fox and Friends’ mixture of poor television reporting and sharp criticism from the right-wing opinion is a microcosm about how strongly Fox values both sides of their network.
To make a fake news piece convincing we mixed news values with feelings. The Project on Excellence in Journalism’s report (2006) showed 68 per cent of Fox News Channel’s cable stories contained personal opinions, as compared to MSNBC at 27 per cent and CNN at 4 per cent. Subjectivity, the combination of twisted truths includes statistics and expert quotes. Consequently, the ultimate purpose of our piece was to be misleading.
We have three premises of incorrect facts which lead to the concluding argument that Megxit represents an anti-UK sentiment that comes from Canada.
