The world is transforming into global businesses and making major shifts in the method they operate and organize in the new economy. The institutes and universities situated around the world are progressively required graduates who are highly skilled and those who have the capability to respond to the complex and ever changing requirements of the workplace (Wild et al, 2014). Students who pursue studies in business management require substantial range of knowledge and skills as a basis for careers in business and to contribute in the society in a positive manner. It is vital that students of business management should assess their offering and curriculum for the purpose to prepare themselves and to match the requirements of the new workplace. It is also imperative to possess certain skills and knowledge for business management students so that they can follow the right future career path that fits their knowledge and abilities.
2 Introduction
These business management programs specifically focus on providing students with the information regarding how the organizations operate to survive in the competitive marketplace. For instance, what organizations do, their business strategies as well as their organizational styles. Furthermore, the business management studies aims to accomplish several outcomes such as effectively communicate by utilizing the business language, foster the skills of students to prepare them to work in entry level positions and to demonstrate knowledge regarding current trends and events in business (Cao & Thomas, 2013). The coursework contains both curriculum requirements (business courses) as well as general requirements (liberal arts courses). Furthermore, each student is also provided the opportunity to take elective courses in one of the following four key areas of study which includes Finance & Banking, General Management, Marketing or Travel & Tourism.
The business management program provides students an access to a broad spectrum of future career path. In most of the cases, the business students are required to specialize in one or more areas of business through a major that will determine the type of positions the students are most likely to enter in the future (Ravn, 2014). For instance, a graduate of business management can pursue a career in finance or accounting because of its growing importance in the business field. Similarly, a business graduate can also enter into the field of marketing or advertising if he or she is more interested in the creative side of the business.
3 Definition of Skills and Knowledge
To accomplish the success as being the business management graduate, the individual should possess certain skills and knowledge that is required by that selected career option (Cao & Thomas, 2013). As discussed above, the business management student has a wide range of career options available to choose from and pursue it effectively to reach higher grounds. For instance, to become a marketing manager, it necessitates substantial efforts as well as certain capabilities from that individual in order to succeed in marketing field.
The individual should have analytical skills and should be in a position to extract valuable information from the vast amount of presented data in the most effective and efficient manner. The marketing manager is also expected to take on a holistic approach by thinking in terms of interconnected, integrated systems and how they impact each other. Furthermore, the marketing manager should have an excellent communication and collaborating skills because it is highly important that the company’s objectives and goals are righty communicated to the whole management for effective end results (Baker, 2014).
4 Ways of developing Skills and Knowledge
As discussed in the previous section that marketing manager requires wide range of skills and knowledge to excel in the professional world. The individuals who constantly engage in efforts to refine their existing skills and capabilities have a more competitive edge in today’s fierce job marketplace (Ravn, 2014). The marketing managers can enhance their analytical skills through consistent practice because this type of skill is developed with time. Also, developing mathematical skills can also prove to be productive in this regard. For building holistic approach, an individual first should evaluate the interconnected elements and then devise tactics regarding how to synchronize them in the cohesive manager to yield positive results. As far as communication skills are concerned, these can be enhanced by possessing a sense of courage, self-confidence and by increasing interaction with other people (Beebe et al, 2014). Whether an individual is listening or speaking, looking into the eyes of the person with whom he or she is conversing can help to make the interaction more efficacious.
