Introduction
The modern society is associated with numerous obligations and negative perceptions, which are believed to the major cause of stress. For a long time, stress was associated with the middle class in the society due to working long hours and under pressure in order to maintain a lifestyle. However, this perception has hanged over time and stress is now believed to be affecting people across all the classes and working environment. In this light, it is evident that stress is a major factor in the modern working life influencing both individuals and organizations. The stress is said to be emanating from excess workload, high number of working hours, and the ever-changing nature of work. In this paper, focus is placed on the stress that is exhibited in the modern working life hence providing the effects on both individuals and organizations. While the existence of stress is appreciated, the paper brings the causes of stress into perspective and how to manage it in the contemporary society.
Causes of Stress
Cowley, Hager & Rogers (1995) argues that stress can be viewed in both negative and positive perspectives. Stress is a complex concept whose impact varies on both individuals and organizations. According to Clark (2002), stress has a great influence on the standard of work as well as general performance. Modern job stress is the physical and emotional responses that an individual experiences in case the responsibilities of the job do not coincide with the capabilities and resource of the performer. Cooper, Dewe & Driscoll (2001) define stress as a mental state resulting from highly demanding circumstances. Judging from this school of thought, there are different circumstances that could lead to stress in an individual or an organization.
