Is Eurocentrism still a major factor in globalization?
Europe is home to many people that have relocated to other regions. People have moved within the continent to other countries and continents. Globalization, on the other hand, is promoted by many factors with Eurocentrism being one of them. Over the years, Europe has propelled and shaped the communication dynamics that led to globalization. People still managed to communicate or receive information whenever they were. Some of the driving concepts are geographical region, global identity and economic influence.
There are many technological developments that have promoted globalization over the years. Communication has been instant from messaging, calls and lately we have seen video conferencing become a reality. Businesses are run efficiently without necessarily requiring the CEO to move from one place to the other (Eriksen 26). News on the other hand is instantly relied to people as they happen using various gadgets available. Currently, people can use their mobile phones to stream news transmitted to the TVs. Their transmission has been encrypted to be receiving by either ends.
Global culture has influenced how people communicate and the channels they use. A good example is the establishment of Hispanic TV stations in the US. They have been developed to cater the large Hispanic community that has migrated from different countries. Through this platform, they feel at home even if they are in a foreign land (Eriksen 54). The language spoken is easily identified by the viewers. On the other hand, their young ones get a chance to learn their culture without risking being washed by the new culture that they are exposed.
Global identity influences how the society gets connected. We will use an example of the English language that has been adopted by many countries, despite not being their first language. The same trend is seen on the colonies of Britain that went on to adapt English as their national language. This has made it accredited on international level where it leads as the language with the highest number of speakers (Eriksen 89). The result has seen many stations formed on the English foundation where all the communication is carried out using English.
Economic influence has seen people take interest on new languages that are not dominant on the global arena. An example is the Chinese language. It has seen an increase in the number of people willing to learn Chinese. In recent years, China has emerged as a large economic power house. The business people are leading the bandwagon to Chinese classes so that they can appeal more to their business associates, Chinese natives (Eriksen 56). The result has reduced the influence of other languages initially enforcing Eurocentrism.
Europe has had its role in enhancing globalization. However, other regions have risen steadily to challenge the position and the result has shifted focus to different regions.
