After the last battle of the Revolutionary war, the federal government set up by 13 states that were merged from former colonies was run under laws termed as the Articles of Confederation. For the need for new rules that could inform a central government on how to work, a revision of the Articles of Confederation was necessary (Artikov et al.). Thus, a Constitutional Convention began in Philadelphia in May 1787. The drafting of the Constitution began by the representatives who attended the convention till September 17, when the convention closed, and the representatives signed the Constitution. The Constitution, therefore, became the law of the land in 1788.
