Air pollution
Pollution is defined as the contamination of substance. Corruption occurs in many forms most common forms of environmental pollutions are air and water. For the purpose of this particular paper, we shall focus on air pollution. Air pollution is a common global economic issue that affects the global society as whole. The discussion involves the types, causes, effects, and recommendations for handling and eliminating the occurrence of air pollution.
Causes of air pollution
Air pollution occurs in two forms as the factors are divided into primary and secondary pollutants. Primary pollutants are sources emitted as a result of a process for example when a manufacturing industry emits sulfur dioxide into the environment. Secondary pollution occurs when emitted gasses react with each other to form a pollutant for instance in a greenhouse where gasses react with one another resulting in carbon pollution.
The burning of fossil fuels in as a major contributor to air pollution. Combustion of coal and petroleum results in the emission of carbon monoxide. The gas is released through industries, vehicles, airplanes among others. Carbon monoxide is thus referred to be a major source of air pollution due to the multiple occurrences globally (causes, effects & solutions of air pollution). Agricultural activities are a source of air pollution in the release of gasses such as ammonia. The Ammonia is released as a consequence of using fertilizers and pesticides. The ammonia released is highly dangerous and not only does it cause air pollution it affects the water as well.
Household air pollution is often ignored as it is perceived to be harmless since the magnitude of occurrence is far much less. Washing detergents, air fresheners among others cause air pollution. The presence may appear negligible but when one calculates the number of houses that produce the fumes one can see the increased quantity and the overall effects.
Mining activities involve the use of explosive made up of harmful chemicals. The bombs are used to bust through the tunnels as well as break the rocks. The explosions then emit the chemical substances and also excessive dust is released due to the breakdown of rocks. The gasses then emitted them because air pollution that eventually affects the health of mining workers who are exposed to the emitted gasses.
Smoke causes air pollution the level of effect then depends on the origin of the smoke. The nature of the gases released by the smoke depends on the nature of the substances being burnt as well as the fuel being used. For example, smoke produced by smokers contains chemicals utilized in the production of cigarettes as well as carbon monoxide is produced during the combustion of gasses.
Air pollution is harmful to both the environment as well as human health. Air pollution causes global warming which is a primary environmental concern. When primary pollutants react with each other in the environment, they react further with the Ozone layer. The O-Zone layer is responsible for protecting the earth against the rays of the sun. Air pollution affects the thickness of the ozone layer thus leading to global warming and changes in climatic patterns.
The air is a primary source of oxygen, the gas that supports life. Air pollution is the major contributing factor for major health complications associated with the heart and the respiratory systems. Lung cancer, heart attacks, asthma, pneumonia among others is occurring as a result of consuming polluted air. The polluted air affects the ability of the respiratory system through cause of infections that in the long run "destroy" parts of the lung.
Consequences of air pollution being a major source of concern globally require an address. Thus environmental organizations, governments, non-governmental organizations, activist groups among other work towards addressing issues associated with the pollution. The 21st century has given w...
