Women and Gender Studies
Introduction
This is an academic genre of studies that contribute very largely to the understanding of both the cultural and the social world. Women and Gender studies curriculum is available in most of the institutions of higher learning across the globe. Through the practice in the same field, a lot of changes and transformations have been put in place with lots of major insights on the social arena (Partricia 121).
The two major insights that come out from this noble course are the awareness through education and the ultimate activism driven by the knowledge attained in class. This course has explained both the positive and negative effects of oppression to the women across the entire universe. Several individuals only become of these situations through education and attending classes relevant to the topic. After understanding the route cause to these problems then an individual can easily tackle the issues bordering this menace in the society.
Women’s Activism
The only way that the women in today’s world can become part and parcel of the various activists groups in the world is through proper education on their rights and obligations. With proper education, these individuals can exercise their democratic rights and then engage in the activities that have for a very long time left into the hands of the males in the contemporary society. Several scholars have highlighted the plight of women in the society. These include articles by Sam Dylan, Anne-Marie O’Connor.
The growth in the number of women activists can be linked to the increased awareness through the available courses and also the information that is very accessible to most of the women. Other programs like the glass ceiling in the media have also brought in a lot of understanding of the plight of women in the contemporary world (Partricia 123). Issues like the working conditions of women in the third are very common. The resurgent injustices have also been highlighted in the media for the public to understand the stress that the women are facing in their quest for supremacy.
Academic awareness creates high degree of activism in the lives of individuals involved therein. This helps them to identify the situations that need to be eliminated to make the society a better place for all dwellers in it. As more people get educated from a set of population, more people will attain the state of not withstanding certain practices in their immediate society and therefore may decide to act in a very positive manner in order to delink the society from such vices. This is very practical in the public protests organized across the globe. The organizers of these protests are the same individuals who will dare to educate the others onto the importance of engaging in such protests.
Women’s Rights
Views and opinions on women have transformed a lot within the last century. There have been several limitations placed on women in most societies of the world. Until late in the early 1920s that the first convention on Women’s rights was convened in New York where letters were drawn to show areas in which women still felt oppressed. This in an ironical twist took place just after the great American Revolution which most thought brought an end to oppression. Needless to say, the women were still lagging behind in this convoy of the fight against oppression.
This period in time became the greatest moment for the women in the world. This was the exact time that these feminist groups made a greater impact to the world although some activities had taken off by early as 1850. This is when the women were given the rights to vote. The concept of a woman greatly changed right from the home setting. Several authors could now acknowledge the presence of the women in the society. These women were given a good and meaningful reputation.
Women form the better part of the human population in the world. Indeed they are more than half the population of humans in the entire universe. This gives them a better chance in the society to fight for their rights. Since human rights are right for all humans in the earth’s surface, then these very rights are also considered as women’s rights. On the same note a society whereby the men fail to recognize their wives as the sole bearers of their sons, mothers as the sole bearers to themselves and daughters as the products of their loin should be considered a society without equality at all.
Women in Employment
The inequalities between men and women have been dwindling in the current society and this has been the case since time immemorial. Women still struggle to maintain the full equality with men at the work place (Linda and Cindy 45). For example in the media, news anchors face an uphill task where the women anchors are required to meet the beauty standards set by the organization in order to lure...
