According to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, it details significant civil rights that prevents discrimination on the account of disability. On the issue of accessibility, it confers the right of access to disabled persons through physical and architectural modifications. In light of the proposed new buildings to be constructed, the report herein details several problem areas in the building plans and consequently outlining corrective measures to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
Evident Problems in the Building Plan and Corrective Measures
The proposed new building has only designed for stairs that shall be used in the access of upper sections of the building. In this regard, the building plan has failed to consider the needs of physically impaired people that use wheelchairs. Consequently, the structural designs needs to be re-modified with the provision of ramps alongside the stairs that can be used by physically challenged persons using wheelchairs or crutches. The slope of the ramps should equally be gently sloping and not steep. These will ensure that persons using the ramps over exert their strength in moving up the ramps.
The restroom facilities in the building plan have not designated a special restroom that takes into consideration of persons with disabilities. In this regard, the restroom plan should be modified by designating a second set of restrooms for the persons with disabilities. Moreover, the restrooms should be installed with grab bars for easy movement and also the water closets should be lowered into a reasonable level of access. The walls in the restrooms should equally be reinforced.
