INTRODUCTION
1.0 Chapter Introduction
Student Affairs in a college or university, is one of the more important offices in the institution. Because it is responsible for student enrollment and retention, Student Affairs is one of the more important offices in any institution of higher education (Hover, 1997). Student enrollment involves three service areas: recruitment, retention, and the creation of a campus life where the students are encouraged to be socially responsible. Therefore, Student Affairs leadership tends to lean towards one that is people centered.
1.2 The Research Background and Research Questions
The key priority of this study is to investigate the Concept of Servant Leadership in Student Affairs. This will be achieved by identifying servant leadership concepts and theories by exploring different Leadership Style of the Dean of the Division of Student Affairs. According to Clegg et al (2007), Servant Leadership is “characterized as a more ethical and people-centered theory of leadership”. Reddick (2011 p. 25) wrote that Greenleaf (1970), indicated that a servant leader is one who starts off having the natural desire to serve, which transcends into a desire to lead while serving others. To test the Servant Leader concept, Greenleaf (1970) posited four questions:
1 How does those served grow as persons?
2 Do they, while being served, become wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants?
3 What is the effect on the least privileged in society?
4 How will they benefit or at least not be further deprived?
