One of the valuable technological advancements of the past 50 years is the World Wide Web (WWW). World Wide Web is the mother of the internet; it is where web addresses get the www. The name World Wide Web comes from the idea that the internet provides connectivity to everyone forming a sort of web, with one person, or one point being in connection with many others. World Wide Web was invented by a computer programmer from Geneva, Tim Berners-Lee in the year 1989. Tim Berners-Lee invented the hypertext whose use has enhanced the networking of computers all over the world (Friedman, 2005).
World Wide Web forms basis for the internet. Internet platform has availed so much information to everyone. Such information was not previously easily available because there was lack of knowledge on how to access proper information although later on this was enhanced by the establishment of various search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing. These search engines index information present in the World Wide Web and make it easily accessible to the public. Furthermore, they provide comparative approaches to the way information is presented which enables people verify validity of information.
Internet forms a basis for social networking sites. The establishment of Social networking applications and sites has made socializing more lively. The various social networking sites such as facebook, myspace, google buzz has made people come together in an online platform. This made sharing information, exchange of experiences, and contacting people easier. The social networking sites designed for professionals such as LinkedIn has enabled professionals to exchange information online. The World Wide Web has brought numerous advantages to human life. Many people from all over the world are using World Wide Web in some way. From his book, The World is Flat, Thomas Friedman describes ten “flatteners” of which World Wide Web is one of them.
According to Friedman (2006), many businesses and individuals depend on the World Wide Web to do their work and generate income.
