Presently, the world is battling the Covid-19 epidemic and the role of medical professionals and nurses in the society has never been more appreciated than it is now. As the world grapples with Covid-19, we are reminded just how important nurses are in the health sector. For me, the epidemic has rekindled my dream and passion of serving the society as a nurse. As a 55 year old, it may sound and feel a bit late to be switching careers. However, I am reminded that it is never too late to pursue one’s dream or to desire to serve. I watch on television as nurses older than me put their lives on the line to help others and I picture myself in their shoes doing the same.
My interest in becoming a nurse has always been with me since I was a child. I was good in science and math and although I did not pursue either at college level, I was lucky to get an opportunity to teach the two subjects to 3rd graders at Houston Independent School District. My short stint as a teacher helped me to reconnect with my passion for science and I feel time is due to take it to the next level. My passion for the science is buttressed by my involvement in the community work and especially helping within the health sector. I am proud to have volunteered at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. At this institution, I witnessed firsthand the suffering of cancer patients and identified with the caregivers’ relentless desire and effort to help improve the patients’ wellbeing. I felt the call to help and I see this as an opportunity to actualize it.
I am also proud of my work at the Texas Children’s Hospital where I volunteered for various roles. I came face-to-face with the tears and pain of children patients and my heart connected with them. I witnessed nurses providing primary care to these children like they were their own. Whether it was feeding, washing, or helping them in the toilet, the nurses’ dedication to these kids moved me. As a mother myself, I appreciate the difficulty of looking after kids especially when they are young and cannot do much by themselves. At Texas Children’s Hospital, I felt the role of a nurse marrying into that of a mother. An opportunity to be a nurse would help me take care of the sick and especially children as if they were my own but at a professional level.
My interest with community service goes beyond the patient and care environment as I have served in other fields, all the same showing my empathy, leadership, and ability to connect with the community. I am a proud member of the Houston Food Bank Apple Corp Member. In my role, I witness frequently the role nutrition plays in healthcare and I already possess significant interaction with social determinants of health. I have also coordinated the Susan B.
