Photographs are meant to capture a moment for future reference. Lighting is a major determinant of how good the photo turns out and should thus be taken very seriously and measures taken to ensure the lighting is at its best. Different sources of light can be used to bring out the best of features.
SIDE LIGHTS
Ceiling lights in some circumstances may not be the best source of light especially in buildings with low ceilings. Lights to the side of the person being photographed can be a very good alternative. The light should be gentle on the person’s features and should be evenly spread out. In cases where the side light is uneven, the features on one side may be clearer. Use of lights on both sides is advised in such cases.
FLASH LIGHT
Modern cameras come with a variety of settings for the flash light. It should be noted that the flash light is not a reliable source of light to cover all your illumination needs. It should be used to enhance or balance the lighting and possibly to eliminate the occurrence of shadows in the photographs. This means that you have to adequately understand your camera to understand how different flash light settings can ensure you take the best of photographs. In places where light is too little, the use of the flash light is not advisable as it will only illuminate a small area. Instead, the photographer can take a little bit more time to focus to allow the camera to take in the light available.
SUNLIGHT
This can be friend or foe depending on its intensity or brightness. The pictures taken outside on a partially cloudy day are usually very good. Too much sunlight may cast shadows in the photographs. It is also harsh on the features of the person being photographed and hence may lead to such things as squinting which may ruin a potentially great photo. Use of light diffusers to eliminate the excess light may be necessary for very bright days. You may also use natural diffusers like shades of trees that have high branches.
LIGHT DIFFUSERS
In some instances, the light may be too much and this may lead to poor photography. This light may be diffused to create ambience. It may also be reflected away from the photograph area to ensure that it is just sufficient for your needs. Although some times the ...
