Despite the fact that color has instantaneous psychological effects, many people do not understand the worth that the right colors have in facilitating communication. The right combination of colors plays a crucial role in communication. This is true considering the fact that color has the ability to sway an individual’s perceptions, change the way of thinking, and induce appropriate reactions. Accordingly, many people use different colors as a tool of communication due to political, socio-cultural, and religious influences associated with color. This paper discusses the effects that color has on communication.
Color acts as evidence of effectiveness. Several businesses use various colors to portray their irresistible, positive and enticing image of their products. Consequently, the colors used attract the consumers to the product, and uses the same to identify and differentiate the product. Therefore, color is vital as a marketing tool and for brand differentiation in the market (Cherry, 2014).
Color has a great ability of adding tremendous meaning to communication. Appropriate colors vitalize the visual message thus creating the desired impression that is instantly understood by the audience. For instance, red depicts danger and its use in warning signs get decoded by the intended audience instantly. Thus, the visual message gets understood instantaneously, and the brain vividly remembers the message for long since color evokes the right emotions (Elliot & Maier, 2007).
The psychological effects connected to color are both subjective and universal. Various hues induce diverse emotions that influence communication. The warm colors: red, yellow and orange induce feelings of comfort, warmth and hostility. These are thus applied to facilitate communications related to the desired psychological effects. Additionally, blue, green and purple are cool colors that depict feeling of reliability, dependability and trust in a given message (Janviere, 2009).
