Dick DeVos and his wife Betsy DeVos have been some of the biggest supporters of education for the less fortunate in the State of Michigan and other States in the country. Their ideas on providing better and quality education for school going children has gained momentum and has been adopted across the country. These efforts were ignited when he and his wife visited the Potter’s House Christian School in Grand Rapids which had been serving children from low-income households for over three decades now. They both started supporting students at the school whose parents were struggling to pay tuition for their children. However, this didn’t entirely fix the education sector as it only benefited some kids as opposed to many other schools going children in the State.
Although I believe that DeVos has the financial capacity to take his children to a good school; he thought that the same opportunities could be extended to other children who could attend a school of their choice. He ran and got elected to the State Board of Education in Michigan in 1990 giving him an avenue to handle the education problem efficiently. They started a foundation that saw parents from low-income households get the opportunity to take their children to the school of their choice. Although this was the right step, it didn’t entirely fix the education inequality in the State. With the efforts of his wife, they managed to start a political action committee called the Great Lakes Education Project that was significantly involved in expanding charter schools in the area. The initiative had taken root and become quite successful in less than two years. Like-minded individuals suggested that it would be an excellent idea to take the project nationwide. This would greatly help low-income families from other states also get the similar chances to take their children to better-performing learning institutions in the country.
