Human resource management decision making is the center of discussion in Be Our Guest Family (BOGF) resort’s case. The case enlightens on the corporate perspective method used to select and retain personnel. BOGF has operated on the “make” approach where the staff is developed from within regardless of their position. The “homegrown” staff end up making the resort a top-level choice that offers high customer satisfaction and a premium vacation experience for its visitors. The human resource policy at BOGF has a record of high employee retention of about fifteen years for many of its staffs. The BOGF policy perspective also focuses on the customer and the main goal is to exceed the customer’s expectations to have them visit the resort repeatedly. The BOGF “make” approach refines the employees’ skills by exposing them to a variety of experiences when serving the customer to make them the top-of-the-line resort.
Mansion Corporation acquired and now operates the family-owned business - BOGF resort. Mansion’s human resource management policy is the “buy” approach. The top-level management of Mansion’s employees are the “star” employees of other companies whom the corporation attract to fill its skill gap. An example is the Chief Technologist and CFO recently hired from their competitors. The Mansion believes that is it cheaper to bring the best and brightest minds in the resort and hence rely on the “buy” personnel administration approach. The approaches of both accompanies are the extreme opposite. While Mansions employees may not know each other, BOGF employees were from the same town and even the same extended family since BOGF could hire from the same family in multiple generations.
