In 2007, Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy became the first minority instructors to lead a team in the Super Bowl. While the event was a milestone, researchers noted that the lack of minority player managers in the football league. Gordon in his journal “The Robinson Rule: Models for addressing race discrimination in the hiring of NCAA head football coaches” recommended to the NCAA a rule mandating the interviewing of at least one minority candidate to ensure coaches of color have the chance to present their qualifications in a hiring process (Gordon, 2008). While this publication produced three models that could boost the number of nonwhite trainers in football, there are limitations related to merely interviewing minorities.
