Is Multitasking a Productive Method of Work?
Most people juggle numerous activities simultaneously, switch back and forth between different activities or perform various tasks quickly to accomplish more. However, multitasking merely increases busyness and reduces productivity drastically. It splits attention and focus, which increases the tendency to make mistakes. Furthermore, it impairs cognitive processes, causing the retention of less information and reducing IQ. It alters how the brain works, which has long-term negative consequences, especially in young minds. Therefore, multitasking is a productivity killer that increases the possibility of mistakes, impairs cognitive processes, causing mental blocks, and slowing down productivity.
Multitaskers often perform two tasks simultaneously in the name of super-efficiency. The brain’s prefrontal cortex focuses attention on a single goal and coordinates with other brain systems to achieve the given task. However, simultaneously performing two or more tasks leads to the right and left lobes working out of sync (American Psychological Association, 2006). It
