Modern China Based on a Brief Biography of Li Shuangshuang
Introduction
A Brief Biography of Li Shuangshuang is a fictional Chinese story that revolves around the life of an imaginary character who agitated for the empowerment of women in ancient China. As a native of China, Li is not happy about how the society is treating women by restricting them to domestic chores. However, she has to overcome the first hurdle herself as her husband is also unenlightened just like other Chinese men at the time. Once she is able to get her husband on board, she steps out to the societal level to fight for the rights of women as part of the foundation for the Great Leap. Central to Li’s argument was that women had the potential to match men just that it was being stifled by outdated traditions. In entirety, this story depicts the early struggles of women in many societies across the globe. It signifies the significance of women going for their rights as the basis of social revolution and modernization.
Body Paragraph 1
The Great Leap Forward (1958-1961) was a significant period for China in terms of social and economic growth. During this time, there was a collective effort by the Chinese to express their vibrancy in socio-economic progress and by so doing, overtake the established economies like the Soviet Union. The fundamental aim of the Great Leap was to get every Chinese working collectively rather than individually as it had been traditionally. The establishment of the commune spelt the end for individualism and all the people were obligated to work together on the farms. Confirmatory to this move, Shuangshuang’s individual work on the fields was not recognized but rather entered on the records of her husband (Spence 423). By moving to the collectivism level, it was expected that everyone in China would make significant contribution to the nation’s economic surge.
