Although a lot of history is available on the American Revolution, there is limited discussion on the role of slaves in the revolution. The Revolution began when the British attempted to assert more control over America, and it lasted from 1775 to 1783. However, the American Revolution is not the first war in which African Americans had fought in the country. For instance, they were banned from participating in the 1639 state militia and from getting positions of leadership or taking religious or military office when Virginia and other colonies perceived that the blacks would instigate an uprising. However, when necessary due to a shortage of the people who usually served in such wars, blacks were recruited to serve. This paper seeks to determine what role blacks played in the American Revolution.[Woody Holton, "Rebel against Rebel: Enslaved Virginians and the Coming of the American Revolution,” The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography 105, no. 2 (Spring, 1997), 157.] [Schuyler C.
