Soil pollution is one of the defining issues that we are facing in our era. According to Demarco and Patricia (2017), the trend is on the rise with a higher percentage of contamination traced back to manmade activities. Soil pollution is the build-up of manmade elements such as chemicals, radioactive materials and disease-causing elements on the soil. Consequently, the presence of such elements leads to negative effects on plants growth and organisms’ health and survival (Sun et al, 2012). Therefore, the essay aims to explore the causes and measures used to mitigate soil pollution
Primarily, industrial activity is the greatest contributing factor towards the problem. With escalating manufacturing and mining of minerals from the planet, the by-products are commonly dumped to the soil surfaces. Furthermore, modern agricultural practices that categorized by use of agricultural chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer assume a role. Commonly, such chemicals dissolve into the soil destructing its composition hence reducing fertility. Rapture of underground tanks and accidental oil dons a role to the menace. Finally, a mixture of pollutants and air which fall back in form acidic rain leads to the problem, mostly such impurities diffuse into the soil causing adverse effects, (Demarco and Patricia, 2017)
The effects due to soil pollution are hostile and hence there need to act now. Most states and international organization are formulating policies in an effort to curb the effects.
