Reality behind Google
In Nicholas Carr article, ‘Is Google Making Us Stupid?’ the writer argues that the advancement in technology that has brought about the aspect of Google has far reaching consequences. It is the doctrine of shifting our minds to the internet that the writer maintains arguing that the internet has corrupted the energy that people had, for example, reading long articles. People spend very little time when reading an item on the internet before shifting their attention to another, and the process continues. This means therefore that most people hardly acquire sufficient knowledge regarding the information they read on the internet because they hop from one item to another. The doctrine of the writer involving the aspect of Google turning people stupid proves to be true according to various studies done concerning this. It is not a surprise that majority of individuals turn to the internet even for the very simple tasks that they would have otherwise accomplished without the use of the internet.
The writer continues to note that the internet has been indeed excellent in its ability to assist in research. However, as people advance on their research, they become over-reliant on the platform to a point of failing to understand even the very minor and simple facts. It has helped to save time that would have been spent in the libraries looking for information. Unfortunately, this time has been shifted to whole night and daytime sessions that people spend in the internet searching for a wide variety of items that may not necessarily assist them. Even as they spend the whole of this time, most are unable to do anything profitable other than marvelous articles for which they do not read completely. The assumption by the writer rendering people stupid because of Google thus becomes reality as people spend much time on the internet at the expense of other development projects. Similarly, they train their minds to absorb very little information because they read sections of information hopping from one article to another.
As the author notes, the Net has become a universal medium, a source of most information that flows through our eyes and ears into our mind. This means that with the availability of Net, searching for information across the world is possible. Nevertheless, the writer says that the same internet that has been applauded by many seem to be chipping away the capacity for concentration and contemplating. This means that people maintain their happiness regarding how the search for information is becoming easy and fast, forgetting the harm they are causing to their mind. Overreliance on this Net makes one lose concentration because the mind is always focused on the internet rendering it a slave.
Consequently, continuous use of internet has made people lazy making them fail to accomplish the tasks they used to. Research by Scott Karp confirms that people who were used to reading books stopped during the onset of the internet. This clearly shows how people have shifted their time to reading online materials. Moreover, this is an indication that people’s concentration levels have gone down making them unable to read books as much as they did before. They lose focus to concentrate on lengthy readings since their mind’s capability of holding content has somehow shrunk.
The style of reading promoted by the internet brings a worrying trend as wolf notes. The style of reading that involved deep reading in earlier technology is losing shape with time. Earlier on, people relied on print media and thus the kind of reading they were used to was the deep reading. This kind of reading engages the mind fully thus interpreting the information read to derive meaning. However, with the current technology, the concept has changed, and people are reading so much information in small sections. In this case, one does not give the mind enough time to interpret information. Online reading also remains subject to various distracters within the internet that divert people away from the main point. Basing on this point, it is clear that the existence of Google in our midst has hindered our concentration thus struggling to understand what we read on the internet.
The text by Nicholas Carr proves procrastination as another challenge posed by Internet users. In his view regarding whether Google is making us stupid, a connection can be made on the relationship between procrastination and how it can lead to stupidity. Normally, when students are assigned to tasks to do, they rely on the internet for research. The same internet has a variety of distracters that are prone to deviate students from their assignments and concentrate on the internet. A good example is Facebook where a student would find a nice group to chat with and before long it is sleep time, and the assignment is not done. The process can co...
